Impressionist Art Quilt; Impression Sunrise In theThe Garden

Barbara Harms Fiber Art

This is hand painted silk.with all the flowers hand painted and appliqued on. In case you didn’t notice, there a lot of those funny little abstract flowers.Yet, this was a fun quilt to make.
In the spring, I like to have my first cup of coffee in the garden, admiring the flowers. The colors seem lit from within. The air is heavy with fragrance of the flowers, it lifts you off your bench. to smell and look at each flower.
I wonder if Monet did that in his garden at Giverny?

About Myself & My Approach Art has always played a role in my life, in one form or another. My family is filled with many artist's, so my love of art came naturally. By my teens, I had narrowed my focus to painting. I decided I was going to become a serious painter. I joined the Las Vegas Artist's Guild at 15, the youngest member at that time. I've continued to paint throughout my life. On occasion I've sold my work, but I had more important priorities, I was raising my children, part of that time as a single parent. My circumstances have changed, the kids are grown and I have more time for Art. Art is a form of therapy for me. I was introduced to quilting & fell in love. In time I missed the creative freedom painting made possible. Then I discovered mixed media fiber art, I was home. MY APPROACH TO ART It's the creative process that holds the greatest attraction for me. Starting with a tiny seed of an idea; vague and blurred around the edges, I follow where that leads. My approach is an instinctual one. Generally, I do little pre-planning. I make creative decisions, choices, directions to take as they present themselves. This approach can lead to quite a few changes in the direction the quilt takes. The outcome can come as a surprise. I love that element of surprise! Sometimes everything just comes together & I think to myself, "this is one of my better ones". when that happens, I can’t wait to show someone. I feel like a six year old, running home from school, a drawing in hand, excited to show Mom. At those times. I'm smiling like the Cheshire cat. I’ve had work published in several magazines., which is gratifying. But the most gratifying thing is having clients be really happy with their purchased art quilt. 2. the quilt is very beautiful. one may think that art has to be on a canvas to be considered artwork, but wherever one decides to express their art work, should be considered art. The quilts are hand painted and they are amazing. Many of our beddings are manufactured from else where. None of the designs on my beddings are hand painted on. These quilts are amazing!

    1. Thanks so much Mirellah. I am an painter for many years so combining painting and quilting methods, thread-painting ect. came as a pretty natural of a direction for me. I love traditional quilting as well and do that too, but art is my leaning.

    2. Mirellah I appreciate your comment and
insights about art quilting. More and more it is gaining acceptance as a art form and not just a craft or hobby it;s popularity is fast rising. That is why many collectors are buying a lot of it at the bargain prices it goes for presently ,being original work. The low prices it is now it is obtainable ,won’t last long, as the popularity raises value. It is quite a good investment at the present time. AS a painter of many years after I developed an interest in traditional quilts, before long I naturally leaned more and more to the art quilting, art using traditional methods in a unique way the painted fabrics and dyed fabric with painting & quilting but added dyeing and produced more artist formds. So fiber art was born!
