My Typical Approach To Creating My Silk Painted Art Quilts
Barbara Harms-Up Close and Personal
I’ve been a painter most of my life.
When I was introduced to quilting, I fell in love, jumping in with both feet. I loved quilting, but began to miss the creative freedom painting offered.
Then, I discovered mixed media art quilting, I was finally home.My Process & Approach
For me, it’s the process of creating that holds the strongest attraction. I love starting with a tiny seed of an idea; vague and blurred around the edges, then I follow where it leads.
My style is fairly loose and instinctual. I don’t a great deal of pre-planning.The creative choices are made as I work on a piece, are based on my gut feelings at the time. This can lead to quite a few changes in direction.
The outcome can come as a surprise.
I love that element of surprise.
Sometimes everything just comes together & I think that this is one of my better ones. I canโt wait to show someone. I feel like a six year old, running home from school, a drawing in hand, excited to show Mom. At those times I’m smiling like the Cheshire cat.

“A SOCIALLY UNCONVENTIONAL PERSON, ESPECIALLY ONE WHO IS INVOLVED IN THE ARTS.”*
*”Warhol and the artists and Bohemians he worked with in the 1960s”
I Googled the phrase bohemian to gain some insight into where the influences for the BoHo Eclectic design style originated. Here’s what I found.
/BOHEMIAN/
Bohemian design draws inspiration from the carefree, bohemian mystique of a world traveler, a gypsy. This is a casual style, a bit unconventional, it reflects the characteristics of a roving band of gypsies, collecting things of interest from the many places they traveled. They created an eclectic mix, blending old and new. Vibrant colors, vintage decor. Layers of patterns and colors. textiles; fringed throws, multiple pillows.
If I were to describe Bohemian, Gypsy or Eclectic design style, the first thing I’d say is forget the rules. With BoHo there don’t seem to be many. This decorating style is unconventional. It emphases personal expression and individuality.
It is associated with art, textiles, world. Think of what you know about gypsies; they were travelers, living on the edge of conventional society. Collectors of interesting “finds”, gathered from their world travels.

I had an idea that I thought was a good one. I made 3 original Daisy themed art quilts, each one different from the others yet they clearly were made to form a cohesive group.Continue reading “Barbara Harms Fiber Art”
When making these art quilts, I had an idea,”Why not make several differentย framed art quilts,ย each one unique, yet designed to be hung together as a grouping?”. Sold together as a group, it would make an attractive display on the wall.ย
Color & Light
In many communities, summer brings an exciting event, “Art In The Park”. You’ll notice it in a variety of cities, some small, others large.
In Las Vegas, my hometown, Art in the Park occupies several blocks. Art lovers pour in from everywhere.
They arrive by the bus load. It’s a “big event”.
Fuel Your Creativity
These trees remind me of a fairy tale. Dust off your childish imagination, and enjoy a world where the trees have faces, and there are tiny stairs leading to their tops. Little creatures can make their homes among their roots, in all the little nooks and crannies. Enjoy the world of pretend!
